Author: Jean Gordon

For new guitar players, the guitar will seem awkward to them at first. However, with an instruction book, a learners DVD, and a few basic exercises, the new guitar player will begin to feel comfortable within a short period of time. You will need to use both of your hands to play the guitar, one to work the notes on the fret board and one to pick the strings. Would you want some information on how to play the guitar? Would you be surprised to know that learning electric guitar lessons is very similar to learning acoustic guitar lessons? Are the lessons you need to learn to play bass guitar the same as the lessons for the acoustic guitar? Then look no further than this article to get the answers you need.

Set up for success.

An instructional DVD, a lesson book, a tuner, and podium are some of the items that you will need. Watching the instructions on the DVD, you can focus all of your attention on playing the guitar. The scales and chords that have to be learned will be found in the lesson book. Tuners are used to keep the guitar tuned up, and podiums are used to free up both hands to play the guitar. After all of the equipment has been purchased, you will be ready to begin your first lesson.

Following directions.

Using your resources will teach you how to hold the guitar correctly while showing you how your fingers will work the fret board. The guitar will begin to feel more comfortable as the teaching tools guide you through rudimentary steps of strumming and picking the guitar. The instructional material, especially the DVD, will help you tune your guitar until you can tune it on your own by ear. Furthermore the lessons will teach you how to read notes which will lead into playing scales and chords, the building blocks of melodies. The final item is a podium that will help keep the sheet music at eye level while you practice the scales and chords.

Build up your strength.

You will be practicing the fret board with your left hand if you are normally right handed. This is where you will create different notes. These exercises are the most difficult and you will need to practice playing notes on the fret board to build up strength in your fingers and hand. After you have had some practice with notes, the lessons will progress to scales and chords that will have to be memorized. The right hand will be used for strumming and picking the guitar. The correct way to hold the pick is between your thumb and forefinger, and this is used to strum and pick the strings. Both techniques will have to be practiced until you are comfortable enough using both of your hands.

Once you have practiced enough to master the basic skills, you can then consider trying to play some of your favorite songs from sheet music. After you are finished learning acoustic guitar, you can apply the knowledge you have gained to learning electric guitar. Although, the if you want to learn to play bass guitar, you'll have to learn a different method and use different sets of instruction.
